Weak arrivals in the mandis recently pushed up the prices of average quality fenugreek seeds to Rs 8700/8800 per quintal. Fresh-crop arrivals from major producing states such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh remain limited. Considering these conditions and declining stocks, market participants expect prices to strengthen further and offer good profit opportunities in the coming days.

New Delhi, 28 October (NNS): Today, the prices of spot nutmeg rose by Rs 20 to Rs 740/745 per kg. However, the arrival of the new crop from producing regions continues in the mandis. Ample stocks in the market and increased supplies have checked the pace of the rally at higher levels, due to this, the market remained stable at the same level. Importers and big traders who had accumulated stocks at higher prices earlier are continuously releasing old stocks into the market to book profits. The availability of new crop stocks and increased supplies in the mandis are exerting pressure on spot prices. The market is likely to witness further strength in the near future.

On seeing the sharp downfall, the spot prices of Erode gatha turmeric declined by Rs 300 to Rs 23100/23200 per quintal as compared to Rs 23400 per quintal a day earlier. However, there is little cause for concern as arrivals seems weak in the markets and old stocks have been decreasing over the past few years. Expecting prices to stabilise before rising further, big traders and stockists are holding back their stocks due to this, the supply seems limited in the markets. Fresh buying and speculative activity in the futures market have also been contributed to the sharp rise in prices. Turmeric is likely to remain volatile in the near future.

However, Turkish poppy seed prices remain stable at their previous levels of Rs 1300/1400 per kg. The arrivals of the new crop in March and April have increased supplies in the mandis which increases the pressure on the prices. The substantial availability of new crop produce and imported material has further increased supplies. Despite this, both the big traders and stockists have sharply curtailed selling at lower levels following the recent marginal decline. Therefore, the market is unlikely to witness a bearish trend in the coming days.

Arrivals in major mandis of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh remain below normal levels, due to this, the availability of the sock seems limited in the spot market. Stockholding by traders has also affected supplies. Globally, limited availability has kept international demand for Indian coriander strong, although high prices occasionally slow the pace of exports. The market is expected to consolidate in the coming days, with scope for further gains.

Following a recent of decline of Rs 10, due to this, cainchicut prices also quoted at Rs 1610/1650 per kg. Demand in the domestic market has increased considerably with the October-November festive season and the onset of winter, prompting spice companies and bulk buyers to step up purchases. However, demand remains subdued despite the ongoing consumption season. Although this year’s crop is expected to be good, the market is likely to strengthen in the near future.

Cumin: May Rise Further
New Delhi, 28 October (NNS): Following a rally in the futures market, domestic average quality spot prices of cumin recently declined by Rs 200 to Rs 28400/29200 per quintal. Uncertainty over weather conditions and temperatures ahead of cumin sowing in October-November has fuelled speculative activity and repeated gains in the futures market. Arrivals remain low in Unjha and other major mandis across the country. Farmers believe that if weather conditions remain unfavourable or sowing is delayed in the coming days, cumin prices could rise to even higher levels. The outlook for cumin remains positive in the coming days.
