New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): At the beginning of the current week, export demand increased, while daily arrivals of new 1509 paddy declined in Haryana and Punjab. As a result, prices of new and old rice rose by Rs 300 per quintal. Rice mills are no longer holding old paddy stocks, and inventories in mandis are also limited. Consequently, demand for both new and old paddy from rice mills has increased. Considering the paddy crop and demand situation in Haryana and Punjab, traders should avoid bearish positions for now. Rice 1401 Steam has recorded a particularly sharp rise. Over the past three days, 1509 Sella rice has gained Rs 300 per quintal, with new Sella rice quoted at Rs 8500/8600 per quintal, its Steam variety at Rs 8700/8800, and 1401 Steam rice at Rs 10100/10200 per quintal. Other rice varieties have also strengthened. Going forward, price movements will largely depend on export demand.
Wheat: No Pressure from Government Sales
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): This year, government wheat procurement has reached the target of 356 lakh metric tonnes. However, wheat arrivals in mandis declined sharply last week, pushing prices up by another ₹30–35 per quintal. In Delhi, prices are now ruling at Rs 3110/3135 per quintal, depending on moisture content and grain colour. With demand emerging from all directions over the past two months, the market has risen by as much as Rs 250 per quintal, while prices have gained up to Rs 500 per quintal from their lower levels. There has been no significant pressure from farmers’ stocks for the past month. Meanwhile, roller flour mills have increased their wheat purchases at higher prices due to stronger dispatch and export demand for flour, maida and semolina. Markets in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have also strengthened again because wheat is moving towards southern markets, and railway rakes are available for transportation. Under these circumstances, traders should avoid taking a bearish position until the government releases wheat stocks into the market.
Maize: increment in the prices despite Higher Arrivals
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Despite an increase in maize arrivals, the market continues to strengthen due to widespread buying by poultry and starch mills. With sellers offering old stocks at higher prices, transactions involving Uttar Pradesh and Bihar maize were reported at an increase of Rs 25 per quintal for delivery in Haryana and Punjab. Bihar maize was reportedly trading at Rs 275/2850 per quintal for delivery in Haryana and Punjab, while Uttar Pradesh maize was quoted at Rs 2650/2700 per quintal. Arrivals of new maize in Madhya Pradesh are expected to increase, although recent bad weather has affected the process. Considering consumption demand and rising prices of other food grains, the market has the potential to strengthen further.
Millet: Prices Likely to Remain Firm
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): The new crop of millet has been arriving for the past one and a half months and crop quality is reported to be very good. Under normal circumstances, prices will not decrease. However, widespread buying by stockists since the beginning of the current month has strengthened the market. For delivery at Mauli Barwala, prices have risen by Rs 200 per quintal, with transactions reported at Rs 2550/2570 per quintal. Markets that were previously trading at Rs 2050/2075 per quintal are now quoting Rs 2325/2350 per quintal. Although this sharp rise could prove disadvantageous in the longer run, further gains of around Rs 50 per quintal remain possible due to continued stockist buying.
Masoor : expected to increase
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): The supply of masoor from the Mungawali, Ganj Basoda, Sagar and Bhopal regions remained limited due to unfavourable price realisations. As a result, its prices in Delhi rose by Rs 25/30 per quintal from their lower levels with delivery-based transactions reaching Rs 6750/6760 per quintal. Canadian masoor at Mundra port is available at Rs 5700/5750 per quintal for different delivery months. After transportation and other costs, the landed price for mills in Delhi exceeds Rs 6000 per quintal. Consequently, prices in Delhi have risen to Rs 6050 per quintal. Desi masoor, which is trading around Rs 6750 per quintal, is also expected to gain further. Small-sized masoor is facing a severe shortage, with raw material prices ranging from Rs 80/87 per kg. Prices of small masoor are also expected to rise further.
Urad: Prices May Rise Again After Correction
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): After widespread buying by pulse mills, profit-booking and selling pressure caused urad prices to decline by Rs 100 per quintal. The market closed at Rs 10100 per quintal for SQ-quality urad, while FAQ-quality urad reached Rs 9850 per quintal. Although consignments arrived in Chennai in recent days, subsequent selling pressure led traders to quote lower container prices. Meanwhile, offers from Rangoon have also become more expensive, and the availability of material in the spot market remains limited. Under these circumstances, traders should avoid bearish positions. Stocks of urad are also limited in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Following a minor correction, urad prices could rise by another Rs 300 per quintal.
Moong: Shortage of Superior Quality stock
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): New moong arrivals from Rajasthan’s Dausa, Khatu, Jaipur, Nagaur and Didwana regions have increased significantly. Arrivals have risen by 28/30 percent over the past five to six days. However, exporters continue to purchase superior-quality produce. Around 14–15 truckloads of Rajasthan moong arrived, with prices ranging from Rs 8300/8600 per quintal, depending on quality. Although the market witnessed some softness over the past two days, the overall situation suggests that moong prices should not be considered significantly bearish.
Tur: prices expected to increase
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Sales of tur dal in northern India remained strong last week. Meanwhile, consignments of Burmese tur that arrived recently have been unloaded at mills in Narela, Bawana, Lawrence Road, Rai and Kundli. As a result, raw tur prices declined to around Rs 9750 per quintal at the lower end. However, importing Burmese tur at current rates is proving more expensive than purchasing at prevailing domestic prices. Therefore, with buying demand emerging, prices could rise by another Rs 400/500 per quintal.
Gram desi: Intermittent Rise Towards ₹8,000
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Advance deals for superior-quality Australian desi chana have been discontinued. At the same time, spot-market availability remains limited, and arrivals are insufficient to create selling pressure in mandis. Only profit-booking has caused a slight decline over the past four to five days. Rajasthan gram desi which was previously trading at Rs 7700 per quintal, has declined to Rs 7400. At current levels, the downside appears limited to around Rs 50 per quintal, while the potential upside is estimated at Rs 500 per quintal. Prices could therefore move intermittently towards Rs 8000 per quintal.
Rajma Chitra: Another Rise Possible
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Some old Chinese Rajma Chitra stocks have arrived, with prices reported at Rs 135/138 per kg for Delhi delivery, depending on quality. Buying interest in Indian and Brazilian produce from the Barshi–Beed line had pushed prices up to Rs 125/130 per kg before the market stabilised. Superior-quality material has sold at Rs 134 per kg. Given limited availability and the fact that new Chinese shipments for September–October are being quoted at $1,380 per tonne, old stocks are expected to become more expensive. Prices of Indian and Brazilian rajma could rise by another Rs 10 per kg from current levels.
Gram kabuli: Further Price Increases Expected
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Despite severe liquidity constraints during the current week, arrivals of Gram kabuli from producing markets have remained limited as sellers are reluctant to offer material. Consequently, prices have risen by Rs 4–5 per kg, with medium-quality produce trading at Rs 85/87 per kg. Although stocks are reportedly available in Delhi cold storages, strong international prices are providing good support to exports. Stocks may become insufficient as demand continues. Significant quantities have been exported from the Indore region over the past one and a half months, and exporters are still actively purchasing material. Demand from several countries is expected to continue, while domestic demand is also improving. Considering these factors, the market is likely to strengthen further.
Pea: Further Rise After Consolidation
New Delhi, 22 October (NNS): Imported peas have become considerably more expensive due to rising prices in Canada. At the same time, the Indian rupee has weakened significantly against the US dollar. At prevailing prices, imported peas are no longer economical on a landed-cost basis at ports. Local and dispatch demand remains strong. Since other pulses have become more expensive, demand for peas has also increased. These factors point towards further price gains. Moreover, the pressure of arrivals from the rabi-season crop has eased in mandis across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, providing additional support to the market.
